Gazania (weed)
Gazania linearis
COMMON NAME : Gazania
BOTANICAL NAME : Gazania linearis
FAMILY : Asteraceae
PLANT GROUP : Weeds
SIZE : Prostrate
LOCAL NOTES:
Planted locally by gardeners initially as a hardy, long flowering, clumping plant.
It has spread beyond its coastal residential block and township boundaries along beach access tracks, roadsides and beyond to Shallow Inlet. Here it has been hand weeded by volunteers but regular surveillance is required to address regrowth.
This plant spreads rapidly in the sandy soil of coastal areas. It is declared an environmental weed in many areas of Australia and its sale by plant nurseries of even 'sterile' forms of the plant is being discouraged.
